Soup Joumou - A celebratory bowl of Haitian Independence

Soup Joumou

Soup joumou was once a dish prepared by French colonists in Haiti which they denied African plantation works the pleasure of eating. Since it gained independence in 1804, Haitians reclaimed it and now make this dish to commemorate and celebrate their emancipation.

Ingredients

500g beef (exclude to make a vegan version) 3 tbsp epis or green seasoning (recipe links below) 2 tsp salt 1 tbsp oil 3 carrots 2-3 white potato 2 turnip 1kg pumpkin 150g pasta/macaroni A few sprigs of Thyme few cloves garlic, crushed 1 scotch bonnet, chopped 1 brown Onion, chopped Salt and Pepper to taste
